The Delta State Police Command has charged journalist Fejiro Oliver to court for allegedly cyberstalking Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Senator Ede Dafinone. The charges stem from Facebook posts where Oliver called the governor a “sleeping governor who rigged election” and referred to Dafinone as a “sleeping senator” among other derogatory terms.
Oliver’s lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has described the charges as frivolous and a desperate attempt to keep his client in custody for exercising his right to free speech and holding public officials accountable. The journalist was arrested on September 18, 2025, and has been detained for over 16 days without trial.
A Federal High Court in Asaba has ordered the Nigeria Police Force to show cause within 48 hours why Oliver should not be released unconditionally. The case is set to be heard on October 9, 2025.
